The pulsating lead single from aespa's fifth mini-album of the same name, featuring Karina, Giselle, Winter, and Ningning, outperformed heavyweights like WOODZ's "Drowning" and BLACKPINK's Rosé's "Toxic Till the End" on the year-end rankings.

Globally, it nestled comfortably between Chappell Roan's boundary-pushing pop and Lil Baby's hip-hop dominance, marking a rare feat for K-pop acts in the platform's top 100.

Fans hailed it as the highest-ranking song from a K-pop group in that elite bracket, crediting its futuristic soundscape, razor-sharp choreography, and enduring appeal that thrived without aggressive promotional campaigns.Released on October 21, 2024, "Whiplash" marked aespa's bold foray into EDM-infused techno, blending hyperpop glitches with cinematic flair that echoed the group's signature metaverse lore. The track's meteoric rise continued into 2025, logging an astonishing 30 weeks on the Billboard Global 200 – a historic first for any SM Entertainment song. This longevity propelled it to new peaks, including a No. 1 debut on iTunes Worldwide Album Chart across 17 regions, from Thailand and Japan to Brazil and Singapore.

Despite initial critiques of SM Entertainment's restrained U.S. marketing push, "Whiplash" exemplified aespa's organic magnetism. The mini-album, comprising six tracks like the introspective "Kill It" and the anthemic "Flights, Not Feelings," debuted atop domestic charts such as Melon and Genie, while dominating international platforms including Tencent Music and Japan's AWA. Its performance video, shot on the iPhone 16 Pro in collaboration with Apple, further amplified its viral footprint.

Aespa's success arrives amid a banner year for K-pop on global stages. While soloists like Rosé (whose "Apt." with Bruno Mars topped the chart overall) and Jennie ("Like Jennie" at No. 62) shone brightly, aespa stood alone as the sole girl group entrant in the top 100. This achievement builds on their 2024 momentum, including "Supernova's" Song of the Year wins at the MAMA and Melon Music Awards, and sets the stage for their 2025 single "Dirty Work," which cracked the Billboard Global 200's top five.

On social media, MYs (aespa's fandom) erupted in celebration, with posts lauding the track's "club-ready energy" and its ability to transcend K-pop silos. "Whiplash isn't just a song; it's a cultural reset," one fan tweeted, echoing the sentiment of Reddit threads praising its digestibility for non-K-pop audiences.

As aespa prepares for high-profile collaborations – including a PUBG: Battlegrounds tie-in and a Street Fighter 6 crossover – "Whiplash" reaffirms their role as innovators. In an era where virtual concepts meet real-world hits, the group continues to whip up a storm far beyond 2024's horizon.
